Sometimes, you just want meat. There are no two ways around it. Unless you’re a vegetarian or a Vegan (both fine life choices, don’t get me wrong), the craving for meat sometimes comes in overwhelming fashion. When it overcomes me, and I have a few favorite places I like to go to. One is a magical place in South Jersey, right across the Ben Franklin Bridge from Center City Philadelphia called simply The Pub. While the name of the place conjures images of beer, beer, more beer and bar food, the fare found here couldn’t be any further from the sandwiches and fried snacks found at most sub-gastro pubs.
Nope, this place serves up classic roasted and grilled meat with classic, English sides. It’s very much a steakhouse with an old-timey atmosphere. The salad bar is pretty epic, with its assortment of cheeses, REAL bacon and zucchini bread. The side dishes, featuring twice-baked potatoes, some of the best onion rings out there and some quite tasty Yorkshire puffs. Their main courses are all pretty delectable as well. There are a vast selection of steaks, seafood options and a chicken and ribs platter that both my wife and mother-in-law go crazy over.
That being said, there’s one thing that I go to The Pub for. The prime rib.
Whenever I’m on a cheat day or when I’m in periods where I’m not exactly following my diet to a tee, I go there and I get the manager’s special prime rib, which is the boneless option. I’ve found there’s very little difference in flavor between bone in and boneless, so why go through the extra work? I get it medium, and it comes in a pool of au jus, melting as I put the knife through it like it was butter and not beef. Every bite just is full of that savory slow-roasted bliss that I get legitimately bummed that my belly fills up, preventing me from eating even more.
My latest visit to the establishment was this past Sunday as part of my birthday weekend extravaganza. I got the prime rib, and it was even better than I had imagined it being before. It truly was a meal fit for a birthday celebration.
If you’re in the area, check out The Pub. It’s located at 7600 Kaighn Avenue, Pennsauken, NJ, 08110. Make sure you go when you have some extra cash, because the menu is not cheap in the least. However, it’s well worth the elevated pricing for quality, quantity, and oh yeah, MEAT.
