Fresh Fruit

Sorry this blog went silent for so long. I just hit a busy patch. I wouldn’t expect daily posts here on out (I’ll try if I have something to write about), but I won’t go a week without posting again. That being said…

The new year is often a time when people like you and me start diets. For me, it’s not so much starting a diet as it is pressing “start” and ending the month-long pause on the diet I’ve been on for almost two years now in the month of December. People like to make dieting out to be this terrible thing, like you’re giving up so much food and having to eat “like a rabbit”.

Those people are full of shit. For as much as I like to eat and eat “bad” foods, there are just as many great foods to eat while dieting. In fact, over the course of a week, you can eat as diversely as you can while off a diet, leaving one day for cheating and the rest of the days making smart choices. It’s all about limiting portion sizes and eating fresh foods.

One of the best things to do while on a diet is eat fresh fruit. In fact, screw all the chemical laden “diet” bullshit, fresh fruit (and vegetables) is the best thing you can eat while watching your weight. It’s full of fiber and water so it keeps you fuller longer, and these foods are obviously fat free. The sugar is the definition of natural, and it’s all in the right proportions. Things like apples, pears, bananas, oranges and the like are all sweet enough that they’re the perfect dessert foods, the best sweet chaser for whatever savory dish you’ve eaten for dinner.

It’s not just about flavor. Texture plays an important role. If given the choice, most people would enjoy juicy food rather than dry or mealy stuff. Most fruit has that juicy texture, especially pears and oranges. I just had a juicy D’anjou pear, and it was the perfect midmorning snack.

I wrote before that this blog isn’t going to be about being a health nut or focusing on nutrition, and that I’m going to give you the heads up about good food. That’s why I’m writing about fruit. It’s good food. Sometimes, you don’t have to pull out the kitchen utensils or cooking vessels to get something that’s great to eat. All you need to do is grab a piece of fruit, rinse it under cold water and enjoy. Seriously, sometimes it’s the simple things in life that own.
